Thanks to the efforts of the &lt;a href="http://imtfolk.org/"&gt;Institute of Musical Tradition&lt;/a&gt;, audience members were treated to the thrilling sonorities that Mr. Bensusan elicits from his &lt;a href="http://www.pierrebensusan.com/guitars.asp"&gt;George Lowden guitar&lt;/a&gt; and assorted effects such as the &lt;a href="http://www.eventide.com/AudioDivision/Products/StompBoxes/Eventide_Space.aspx"&gt;Eventide Space&lt;/a&gt; reverb foot pedal.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-hSDCATgFTOI/T75Wb0RclkI/AAAAAAAAC9Q/8nI5Ln6ZE3g/s1600-h/Pierre%252520Bensusan%252520IMT%252520Takoma%252520Park%2525202012-05-023-02%25255B6%25255D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="margin: 0px 5px 0px 0px; display: inline; float: left" title="Pierre Bensusan IMT Takoma Park 2012-05-023-02" alt="Pierre Bensusan IMT Takoma Park 2012-05-023-02" align="left" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-a5HMnnIeS1A/T75Wb1snYII/AAAAAAAAC9Y/EEh7c3kZMzE/Pierre%252520Bensusan%252520IMT%252520Takoma%252520Park%2525202012-05-023-02_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="171" height="281" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;Pierre remarked that he felt like he had been driving for days on end and had just found his guitar again. He opened his first set without comments and dug into several songs from his vast repertoire that trace his interest in Celtic, French, and Middle Eastern music. Often using either wordless vocals or even the occasional whistle, Mr. Bensusan’s music always told a story. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Pierre concluded the concert by making a rare move from his seated perch and launched into a improvisational motif of Middle Eastern based patterns that reminded me of the great Oud player &lt;a href="http://www.dhaferyoussef.com/"&gt;Dhafer Youseff&lt;/a&gt; (click link to watch video).&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Mr. Bensusan is in the middle of a 40 city tour of the US and next heads to western states.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div style="padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: none; padding-top: 0px" id="scid:5737277B-5D6D-4f48-ABFC-DD9C333F4C5D:bcff6e9a-38f3-4436-aabf-a69e7fc1c3d8" class="wlWriterEditableSmartContent"&gt;&lt;div id="6215ee6f-5676-4029-bbbd-b25e3bf94e2c" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; display: inline;"&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpjLe5Q0GGg" target="_new"&gt;&lt;img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-pfrFXBYgtkM/T75WcH-IE7I/AAAAAAAAC9o/97_ggwhUik0/videob81a177b6894%25255B31%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-style: none" galleryimg="no" onload="var downlevelDiv = document.getElementById('6215ee6f-5676-4029-bbbd-b25e3bf94e2c'); downlevelDiv.innerHTML = &amp;quot;&amp;lt;div&amp;gt;&amp;lt;object width=\&amp;quot;560\&amp;quot; height=\&amp;quot;315\&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;param name=\&amp;quot;movie\&amp;quot; value=\&amp;quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/jpjLe5Q0GGg?hl=en&amp;amp;hd=1\&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/param&amp;gt;&amp;lt;embed src=\&amp;quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/jpjLe5Q0GGg?hl=en&amp;amp;hd=1\&amp;quot; type=\&amp;quot;application/x-shockwave-flash\&amp;quot; width=\&amp;quot;560\&amp;quot; height=\&amp;quot;315\&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/embed&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/object&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/div&amp;gt;&amp;quot;;" alt=""&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="width:560px;clear:both;font-size:.8em"&gt;PIerre Bensusan IMT Folk Concert Video&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-8592960390213813176?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2012/05/return-of-king-of-dadgad-pierre.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media='http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' url='http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Iakem1Rl7qs/T75WbUdH0gI/AAAAAAAAC9I/bo_nJzm6pt0/s72-c/Pierre%252520Bensusan%252520IMT%252520Takoma%252520Park%2525202012-05-023-01_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800' height='72' width='72'/><thr:total>0</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink='false'>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3727995.post-3827772839038314087</guid><pubDate>Wed, 04 Apr 2012 18:17:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2012-04-04T14:17:06.449-04:00</atom:updated><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Music</category><title>Matt Flinner Trio @ IMT Saint Mark Presbyterian Church 04-02-2012</title><description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-aWKZY4ZsCXU/T3yQHQUG8nI/AAAAAAAAC8o/TCBaxPklddU/s1600-h/Matt-Flinner-IMT-2012-04-02%25255B7%25255D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="display: inline" title="Matt Flinner Trio @ IMT Saint Mark Presbyterian Church 04-02-2012" alt="Matt Flinner Trio @ IMT Saint Mark Presbyterian Church 04-02-2012" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-CaOb3sTdz_M/T3yQIbnYr3I/AAAAAAAAC8w/ft0j2pvjeuU/Matt-Flinner-IMT-2012-04-02_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="558" height="398" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Many will know of the work of &lt;a href="http://www.dawgnet.com/"&gt;David Grisman&lt;/a&gt; – the Godfather of the modern mandolin. Others will know &lt;a href="http://www.punchbrothers.com/"&gt;Chris Thile&lt;/a&gt; – the modern mandolin phenomenon of Nickel Creek and now Punch Brothers fame. Add to this prestigious list &lt;a href="http://www.mattflinner.com/"&gt;Matt Flinner&lt;/a&gt; who appeared with his exceptional trio at Saint Mark Presbyterian Church on Monday night. The concert was presented by the &lt;a href="http://imtfolk.org/"&gt;Institute of Musical Traditions&lt;/a&gt; who continue to bring the best and the brightest of modern Folk music to the Washington metro area.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Along with Matt on mandolin were bassist Eric Thorin and guitarist Ross Martin who weaved a tight fabric of jazz tinged acoustic string music. Matt indicated that this was their last stop of the current tour. They played several songs from their recently released &lt;em&gt;&lt;a href="http://compassrecords.com/album.php?id=943"&gt;Winter Harvest&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/em&gt; record on Compass records. The precision of their playing was exceptional.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;For the second set, Matt introduced their ongoing “Music Du Jour” where each member writes a new song and they debut them on stage during the tour. The three tunes were the Ross composition &lt;em&gt;Circus Market&lt;/em&gt;, Matt’s &lt;em&gt;‘Rested&lt;/em&gt;, and Eric’s &lt;em&gt;Flying Home&lt;/em&gt;. All of the songs played to the trio’s strengths.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;If you have an interest in innovative acoustic music and enjoy the works of players such as David Grisman, Tony Rice, Mike Marshall, or Darol Anger, you will most certainly love the music of Matt Flinner and his trio. Highly recommended!&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-3827772839038314087?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2012/04/matt-flinner-trio-imt-saint-mark.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media='http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' url='http://lh6.ggpht.com/-CaOb3sTdz_M/T3yQIbnYr3I/AAAAAAAAC8w/ft0j2pvjeuU/s72-c/Matt-Flinner-IMT-2012-04-02_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800' height='72' width='72'/><thr:total>0</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink='false'>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3727995.post-8903296646131745288</guid><pubDate>Mon, 27 Feb 2012 16:32:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2012-02-27T12:05:24.224-05:00</atom:updated><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Music</category><title>The Saiyuki Trio - Nguyên Lê at the Embassy of France, February 25, 2012</title><description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-X5iWoRR0GC0/T0uwD0BU54I/AAAAAAAAC7Q/TXon6HQRas8/s1600-h/Saiyuki-Trio-Final-Bow%25255B5%25255D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="display: inline" title="The Saiyuki Trio Final Bow" alt="The Saiyuki Trio Final take a bow (tiger guitar and tablas in background)" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-XYeFFS3iA-U/T0uwEADPJ5I/AAAAAAAAC7Y/eWITDWiTQi0/Saiyuki-Trio-Final-Bow_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="564" height="363" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;French Vietnamese electric guitarist &lt;a title="Nguyên Lê website" href="http://www.nguyen-le.com/Site_Nu/Bonjour.html"&gt;Nguyên Lê&lt;/a&gt; returned to the &lt;a title="Embassy of France in Washington" href="http://www.franceintheus.org/"&gt;Embassy of France&lt;/a&gt; in Washington, DC with his exceptional world fusion &lt;a href="http://www.nguyen-le.com/Site_Nu/Saiyuki.html"&gt;Saiyuki Trio&lt;/a&gt; (Journey to the West). The trio featured Mieko Miyazaki on koto and Prabhu Edouard on tabla.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Reminiscent of &lt;a href="http://www.johnmclaughlin.com/"&gt;John McLaughlin’s&lt;/a&gt; genre busting east meets west &lt;a title="Shakti video" href="http://youtu.be/qyCH70FODJA"&gt;Shakti&lt;/a&gt; ensemble, Nguyên and his companions took the concert attendees on a mind bending trip through almost all the cultures of near and far east but rooted in western Jazz improvisation. At one point, the trio played a Mieko composition (Izanagi Izanami) about the time before the world was born that was thrilling and ferocious all at the same time.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Nguyên Lê has always had a knack for a being a chameleon of sound. His guitar tone danced between playing unison lines with Mieko’s Koto, sounding like an indian mandolin (ala U. Srinivas), or at other times evoking Jimi Hendrix. His custom “&lt;a title="Tiger&amp;#39;s Tail electric guitar" href="http://www.nguyen-le.com/Site_Nu/Tigers_Tail_gt.html"&gt;Tiger’s Tail&lt;/a&gt;” guitar allows him to dive bomb his tremolo bar whole octaves at a time. This guitar workout finally got the better of him towards the very end of the concert which precipitated an impromptu string change. This man badly needs a guitar tech! I humbly volunteer! Prabhu ably jumped into the fray and vamped for time with a great tabla improvisation.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I have long admired Nguyên Lê’s artistry and own almost all his albums and a few bootlegs as well. This was the first time I have seen him live and I was not disappointed. If this trio is within five hundred miles of where you live, do not miss them!&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-zxq5upQOrkU/T0uwEoTUNZI/AAAAAAAAC7g/JFJ4Pzfn7tg/s1600-h/Mieko-seated-with-Koto%25255B9%25255D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="display: inline" title="Mieko-seated-with-Koto" alt="Mieko-seated-with-Koto" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-SGhvP1JemHQ/T0uwE2JFJCI/AAAAAAAAC7o/pCFg3nOh_HA/Mieko-seated-with-Koto_thumb%25255B7%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="565" height="384" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-9lvo3giZhCE/T0uwFMpZsQI/AAAAAAAAC7w/uIEYWnP5jFE/s1600-h/Mieko-and-Nguyen-Playing%25255B6%25255D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="display: inline" title="Mieko-and-Nguyen-Playing" alt="Mieko-and-Nguyen-Playing" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-nEWXwThQHAA/T0uwFR-sGQI/AAAAAAAAC74/KRElrUgMbBI/Mieko-and-Nguyen-Playing_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="566" height="365" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-fBKb0z9xJEk/T0uwFnZaINI/AAAAAAAAC8A/Nz_TIFU5uVU/s1600-h/Koto-closeup%25255B12%25255D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="display: inline" title="Koto-closeup" alt="Koto-closeup" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-HT_cpi0K-uo/T0uwF5YdVtI/AAAAAAAAC8I/skiNJtkvvwo/Koto-closeup_thumb%25255B10%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="566" height="403" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-f-8JVHun77A/T0uwGRIqfMI/AAAAAAAAC8Q/EqZXVBBmQTU/s1600-h/Prabhu-tablas%25255B10%25255D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="display: inline" title="Prabhu-tablas" alt="Prabhu-tablas" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-PFm4C4_DbZ4/T0uwGvb-vnI/AAAAAAAAC8U/qgV0NkYi_h8/Prabhu-tablas_thumb%25255B8%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="567" height="387" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-8903296646131745288?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2012/02/saiyuki-trio-nguyen-le-at-embassy-of.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media='http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' url='http://lh3.ggpht.com/-XYeFFS3iA-U/T0uwEADPJ5I/AAAAAAAAC7Y/eWITDWiTQi0/s72-c/Saiyuki-Trio-Final-Bow_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800' height='72' width='72'/><thr:total>0</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink='false'>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3727995.post-974120005233524624</guid><pubDate>Mon, 21 Nov 2011 16:47:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2011-11-21T11:47:47.863-05:00</atom:updated><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Tech</category><title>Kindle Fire Side Load Apps</title><description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" border="0" src="http://www.thetechlabs.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/kindle-fire-app-games.jpg" /&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I’ve been playing with my new Kindle Fire since I received it last week.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;It’s a nice tablet. Pat and Larry had an electric synergy that was captivating to watch. Pat then gave some opening remarks which led to some acoustic guitar and bass duets. Larry left the stage and Pat launched &lt;em&gt;&lt;a href="http://open.spotify.com/track/47YmKttl3haN8jTU9zwugB" title="Into the Dream on Spotify"&gt;Into the Dream&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/em&gt; featuring his Pikasso harp guitar. This was a real crowd pleaser. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Larry returned to the stage and Pat initiated a series of loops using his midi equipped Ibanez guitar. This abstract space jam with Larry providing bowed bass effects eventually blossomed into the “mini-me” Orchestrion setup that had been hiding behind a curtain for the entire concert. Pat added layer upon layer of loops to trigger the midi accordion, glass harmonica, drums, and glockenspiel to create a full working band to accompany Larry and Pat. Having seen the full Orchestrion show just a year earlier, I was thrilled at the spectacle once again! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pat and Larry returned for two encores and completed the show on a high note.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I first saw Pat Metheny with his original Quartet in the late 1970’s at the famous &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cellar_Door"&gt;Cellar Door&lt;/a&gt; club in Georgetown (Washington, DC). I have seen nearly every incarnation since. It is wonderful after all this time that Pat can still hold an audience in rapt attention.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-ZHu83uf3ysY/ToyFHk4g-SI/AAAAAAAAC44/-27iVbs2xII/s1600-h/patmeth-up2%25255B4%25255D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img alt="patmeth-up2" height="405" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Iw-x6UyxLgg/ToyFH71dWjI/AAAAAAAAC48/La7EWZqxoUU/patmeth-up2_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="display: inline;" title="patmeth-up2" width="556" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-n_LhLDozN4o/ToyFIWZgwBI/AAAAAAAAC5A/BtbQ7HmP5Vo/s1600-h/patmeth-up3%25255B6%25255D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img alt="patmeth-up3" height="422" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-vIqib8ujJNs/ToyFIoVH6JI/AAAAAAAAC5E/BDbmYVQT320/patmeth-up3_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="display: inline;" title="patmeth-up3" width="556" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-2649952560883199017?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2011/10/pat-metheny-larry-grenadierstrathmore.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media='http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' url='http://lh5.ggpht.com/-wrKR1VGP9eQ/ToyFHYanBLI/AAAAAAAAC40/7eKS3Oy1eUg/s72-c/patmeth-up1_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800' height='72' width='72'/><thr:total>1</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink='false'>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3727995.post-1546422757806287687</guid><pubDate>Tue, 27 Sep 2011 23:44:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2011-09-27T19:54:38.803-04:00</atom:updated><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Audio</category><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Hi-Fi</category><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Vinyl</category><title>Low Output MC Cartridge, USP-1, and SUT</title><description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.stereophile.com/images/archivesart/610listen.bob.jpg" /&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I've long been a vinyl-phile since I was a kid (now 51). I've got a few thousand records, some are over 40 years old that I bought as a kid and still sound great!. I also run a linux based (&lt;a href="http://vortexbox.org/downloads/"&gt;vortex box distro&lt;/a&gt;) &lt;a href="http://www.logitech.com/en-us/speakers-audio/wireless-music-systems"&gt;Squeezebox&lt;/a&gt; server with about 5,000 FLAC albums. Over 1.5 tb of files! I'm not a luddite, I just enjoy the sound and experience of vinyl.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I recently upgraded to a &lt;a href="http://www.dynavector.com/products/cart/e_20x2.html"&gt;Dynavector DV-20x2&lt;/a&gt; which has an output of only 0.3 mv. Previously, I had been using a medium output (0.9 mv) Benz Glider on my stock VPI scout turntable into an &lt;a href="http://emotiva.com/usp1.shtm"&gt;Emotiva USP-1&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;After setup and taking time to assess the new cartridge, I started to wonder if I could improve things. My main assessment of the DV-20x2 into the USP-1 was that the sound was okay but maybe lacking in extension on both the low end and high end frequencies. I was especially concerned that I was not retrieving all the high end information I knew to be on the recordings I was very familiar with.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;After further research, I decided to try a SUT (Step Up Transformer) and chose the $395 &lt;a href="http://www.bobsdevices.com/cinemag.htm"&gt;Cinemag 3440A&lt;/a&gt; model from Bob's Devices. I consulted by email with Bob about my exact setup and which of his devices would be recommended. A quick PayPal transaction ensued and less than a week later I had this little magic box in my hands.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Paying close attention to cable layout using my own custom cables (&lt;a href="http://www.gotham.ch/en/index.php?section=docsys&amp;amp;cmd=22_details&amp;amp;id=15"&gt;Gotham GAC-4/1&lt;/a&gt;)with the shield attached only at the source end only (as recommended by Bob) resulted in a very quiet installation with no evident hum whatsoever. Only a small amount of hiss is evident but inevitable when dealing with such minuscule voltages. In case it is not obvious, the purpose of the SUT is to magnify the gain from the cartridge to a sufficient level to drive the moving magnet stage of a preamp. The SUT I bought features a 10x and 16x option and it was recommended I use the 10x selection.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The positive change the SUT brought to my vinyl playback chain was very dramatic to say the least. All reservations I had before were erased and my records now had the frequency extension and dynamic impact I longed for and expected. Some may say that spending an additional $400 for a device attached to a $400 preamp is a lopsided expenditure. All I can say is my vinyl now sounds exceptional and I can't stop listening.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;You can read all about &lt;a title="Bob&amp;#39;s Devices" href="http://www.bobsdevices.com/"&gt;Bob's Devices here&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Also, there was a good &lt;a title="Art Dudley on Bob&amp;#39;s Devices SUT" href="http://www.stereophile.com/artdudleylistening/listening_90/"&gt;write-up&lt;/a&gt; not too long ago in Stereophile.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;One other advantage for using a SUT is that the MM specification seems to be more standardized which I think my contribute to the quality of what I am hearing. I gather MC stages are less standardized and thus more susceptible to sound variations like I experienced. I surmise that when dealing with such low voltages, that cartridge loading (100 ohm, 1k ohm, 47k ohm) becomes ever more critical.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;So, for those of you that continue to explore the vinyl world and have ventured into using low output MC cartridges, you may want to add a SUT device like Bob's Devices to your toolbox.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-1546422757806287687?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2011/09/low-output-mc-cartridge-usp-1-and-sut.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><thr:total>1</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink='false'>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3727995.post-495972220158387999</guid><pubDate>Fri, 09 Sep 2011 16:04:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2011-10-08T21:37:48.568-04:00</atom:updated><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Music</category><title>BSO &amp; Marin Alsop 2011-12 Preview Concert</title><description>&lt;a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-u27tvmNt8W8/TnYkQxu1ekI/AAAAAAAAC4I/_mpowejBXvA/s1600-h/2011-09-08%25252021.21.58%25255B17%25255D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img alt="2011-09-08 21.21.58" height="450" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-9cUK6Vxjfh4/Tmo5IEILqdI/AAAAAAAAC4M/FrlSHfxSwjY/2011-09-08%25252021.21.58_thumb%25255B17%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="display: inline; margin: 0px 0px 5px;" title="2011-09-08 21.21.58" width="556" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Last night, I attended a wonderful concert at the Strathmore Music Center. Marin Alsop led the BSO in a sampler concert featuring excerpts of works that will be played during the forthcoming 2011-12 season. Highlights for me included a sublime &lt;em&gt;Afternoon of a Faun&lt;/em&gt; by Debussy. Alsop provided informative program notes before each piece and pointed out the scandalous for the time “Devil’s Triad” of notes. I was also thrilled to hear the powerful &lt;em&gt;Thus Sprach Zarathustra &lt;/em&gt;also known as the theme from the Stanley Kubrick movie &lt;em&gt;2001 A Space Odyssey&lt;/em&gt;. The opening &lt;em&gt;Fanfare for the Common Man&lt;/em&gt; by Copland was very powerful and moving as was his theme from &lt;em&gt;Appalachian Spring&lt;/em&gt;. Is there any more quintessential American Music? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The BSO under Ms. Alsop’s direction was in top form and based on the smiles on their faces seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves! &lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-495972220158387999?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2011/09/bso-marin-alsop-2011-12-preview-concert.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media='http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' url='http://lh6.ggpht.com/-9cUK6Vxjfh4/Tmo5IEILqdI/AAAAAAAAC4M/FrlSHfxSwjY/s72-c/2011-09-08%25252021.21.58_thumb%25255B17%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800' height='72' width='72'/><thr:total>0</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink='false'>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3727995.post-6672064500842381381</guid><pubDate>Sat, 09 Jul 2011 22:40:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2011-07-09T18:40:44.236-04:00</atom:updated><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Audio</category><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Hi-Fi</category><title>Capital Audiofest 2011</title><description>&lt;p&gt;Yesterday, I attended the second annual Capital Audiofest. This year the event was hosted in a hotel in Rockville, MD. A very wide selection of audio equipment was on display and available for audition. Several audio industry celebrities were on hand including John Atkinson (Stereophile), Peter McGrath (Wilson Speakers), and Dan D’Agostino.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Additional show coverage can be found &lt;a title="Stereophile coverage of the Capital Audiofest 2011" href="http://www.stereophile.com/category/capital-audiofest-2011"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Congratulations to show organizer Gary Gill for another outstanding event.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I have posted my &lt;a title="Capital Audiofest 2011 Photos by Chris Barker" href="https://picasaweb.google.com/ctbarker32/CapitalAudiofest2011?authuser=0&amp;amp;feat=directlink"&gt;pictures&lt;/a&gt; of the event for others to enjoy.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;table style="width: 194px"&gt;&lt;tbody&gt; &lt;tr&gt; &lt;td style="background: url(https://picasaweb.google.com/s/c/transparent_album_background.gif) no-repeat left 50%; height: 194px" align="center"&gt;&lt;a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/ctbarker32/CapitalAudiofest2011?authuser=0&amp;amp;feat=embedwebsite"&gt;&lt;img style="margin: 1px 0px 0px 4px" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MbhO39JEw2s/ThjVqDuDRhE/AAAAAAAACwQ/KagYY5-9OjM/s160-c/CapitalAudiofest2011.jpg" width="160" height="160" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/td&gt; &lt;/tr&gt; &lt;tr&gt; &lt;td style="text-align: center; font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 11px"&gt;&lt;a style="color: #4d4d4d; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none" href="https://picasaweb.google.com/ctbarker32/CapitalAudiofest2011?authuser=0&amp;amp;feat=embedwebsite"&gt;Capital Audiofest 2011&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/td&gt; &lt;/tr&gt; &lt;/tbody&gt;&lt;/table&gt; &lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-6672064500842381381?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2011/07/capital-audiofest-2011.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media='http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' url='https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MbhO39JEw2s/ThjVqDuDRhE/AAAAAAAACwQ/KagYY5-9OjM/s72-c/CapitalAudiofest2011.jpg' height='72' width='72'/><thr:total>1</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink='false'>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3727995.post-4248699111112701257</guid><pubDate>Fri, 24 Jun 2011 17:36:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2011-09-18T13:08:02.406-04:00</atom:updated><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Music</category><title>Nordic Jazz 2011 – House of Sweden</title><description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-w4jpQifoWqc/TgTLNjHfUWI/AAAAAAAAC4Q/vq42UlATUIE/s1600-h/Nordic%252520Jazz%2525202011%252520Banner_%25255B1%25255D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="margin: 0px 0px 5px; display: inline" title="Nordic Jazz 2011 Banner_" alt="Nordic Jazz 2011 Banner_" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-38IHpxeCmnw/TgTLNyo7g-I/AAAAAAAAC4U/5do47LHiOrk/Nordic%252520Jazz%2525202011%252520Banner__thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="553" height="389" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Another wonderful concert at the House of Sweden on the shores of the Potomac this past Sunday – June 19, 2011. On tap were three Nordic Jazz bands – In the Country (Norway), Tonbruket (Sweden), and the Andres Thor Trio (Iceland).&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I enjoyed all three bands and was able to capture pictures and sounds with my LX3 and H1. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;In the Country had a cool mellow vibe that quietly ebbed and flowed with adroit use of piano, bass, and drums accented by burbling ambient electronics. Quite effective!&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Tonbbruket used an interesting sampling of instruments including piano, bass, drums, guitar, and pedal steel to achieve both calm and driving sounds that were very engaging.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Andres Thor was the most traditional of the three bands and explored the classic bass, drums, and guitar trio sound to full effect. As I confirmed in my conversation with Adres Thor afterward, he cites John Scofield as one of his influences.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;This is the fifth year for Nordic Jazz. I am pleased that I have been able to attend the last three of these years. I have high hopes for this series going forward.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-heVqF9icFlc/TgTLODYa-zI/AAAAAAAAC4Y/P065JKEDfHI/s1600-h/Nordic%252520Jazz%2525202011%252520-%252520Andres%252520Thor%25255B1%25255D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="margin: 0px 0px 5px; display: inline" title="Nordic Jazz 2011 - Andres Thor" alt="Nordic Jazz 2011 - Andres Thor" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-OqWiX2Bea7M/TgTLOZ73RpI/AAAAAAAAC4c/sX5ZJJqDtaU/Nordic%252520Jazz%2525202011%252520-%252520Andres%252520Thor_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="549" height="845" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-4248699111112701257?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2011/06/nordic-jazz-201-house-of-sweden.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media='http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' url='http://lh3.ggpht.com/-38IHpxeCmnw/TgTLNyo7g-I/AAAAAAAAC4U/5do47LHiOrk/s72-c/Nordic%252520Jazz%2525202011%252520Banner__thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800' height='72' width='72'/><thr:total>0</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink='false'>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3727995.post-1644210757380281919</guid><pubDate>Wed, 15 Jun 2011 16:13:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2011-09-18T13:09:12.637-04:00</atom:updated><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Music</category><title>Kuára at Finland Embassy 06-14-2011</title><description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-KhdiYcdIfUo/TfjaNzzC5LI/AAAAAAAAC4g/wOIFVWZTlzs/s1600-h/Per%252520J%2525C3%2525B8rgensen%252520with%252520Ku%2525C3%2525A1ra%252520at%252520Finland%252520Embassy%25252006-14-2011%25255B4%25255D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="margin: 0px 0px 5px; display: inline" title="Per Jørgensen with Kuára at Finland Emabassy 06-14-2011" alt="Per Jørgensen with Kuára at Finland Emabassy 06-14-2011" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-jq02HTEcfu8/TfjaOOMakmI/AAAAAAAAC4k/tgYY3vmhJOE/Per%252520J%2525C3%2525B8rgensen%252520with%252520Ku%2525C3%2525A1ra%252520at%252520Finland%252520Embassy%25252006-14-2011_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="557" height="815" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Last night, I attended a wonderful jazz concert at the foliage filled Finland Embassy in Washington, DC. The music was part of the annual Nordic Jazz week that marshals the resources of the Scandinavian embassies. The series concludes on Sunday 06/19/2011 with an outdoor concert on the rooftop of the Swedish Embassy along the Georgetown waterfront.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The concert at the Finland Embassy featured ECM recording artists &lt;a href="http://ecmreviews.com/2010/12/21/kuara/"&gt;Kuára&lt;/a&gt; with Per Jørgensen on trumpet. This was their &lt;a href="http://www.facebook.com/notes/ecm-records-usa/rare-us-appearances-by-ecm-musicians-from-europe/206467462724428"&gt;first concert&lt;/a&gt; in the United States. True to the ECM sound, the music mixed jazz, folk songs, and ambient sounds in an exciting and dramatic fashion. What a delight.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The concert gave me an opportunity to try out my newly purchased Zoom H1 recorder. My brief listen of the result sounds very good. I will now have to hunker down to perform the post editing to bring out the best results. Based on this test, I believe the H1 is close to equal to my H2 that has served me so well.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I also took many pictures with my trusty Panasonic LX3. Even with the challenging light situation, I captured a few good shots.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-1644210757380281919?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2011/06/kuara-at-finland-embassy-06-14-2011.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media='http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' url='http://lh3.ggpht.com/-jq02HTEcfu8/TfjaOOMakmI/AAAAAAAAC4k/tgYY3vmhJOE/s72-c/Per%252520J%2525C3%2525B8rgensen%252520with%252520Ku%2525C3%2525A1ra%252520at%252520Finland%252520Embassy%25252006-14-2011_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800' height='72' width='72'/><thr:total>0</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink='false'>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3727995.post-6535562636955946656</guid><pubDate>Thu, 17 Mar 2011 16:21:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2011-09-18T13:10:16.737-04:00</atom:updated><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Music</category><title>More Reverb – Pierre Bensusan @ IMT 03-16-2010</title><description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-KyA0ujycP30/TYI071EPchI/AAAAAAAAC4o/Nldhhomh1kM/s1600-h/Pierre%252520Bensusan%252520%252540%252520IMT%25252003-16-2010%25255B3%25255D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="margin: 0px 0px 5px; display: inline" title="Pierre Bensusan @ IMT 03-16-2010" alt="Pierre Bensusan @ IMT 03-16-2010" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-w5iZcmSU6Oo/TYI08A_JhJI/AAAAAAAAC4s/uUhH1wThK_Y/Pierre%252520Bensusan%252520%252540%252520IMT%25252003-16-2010_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="553" height="452" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Last night &lt;a title="Pierre Bensusan website" href="http://www.pierrebensusan.com/index.php?newlang=english"&gt;Pierre Bensusan&lt;/a&gt; returned to the DC Metro area with an exhilarating set of acoustic music. The reverb remark was a running gag throughout the concert much akin to the “more cowbell” joke made famous in an &lt;a title="More Cowbell SNL Skit" href="http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/80a71ef8cb/more-cowbell"&gt;SNL skit&lt;/a&gt;. At one point, I shouted “more cowbell” and Pierre responded with bemusement to the unfamiliar concept and added it to his ongoing humorous remarks between songs. Even though he was near the end of this tour, he was clearly in a jovial mood!&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Pierre played his trademarked open tuning guitar based music that shifts seamlessly between medieval folk songs, celtic reels, wordless jazz singing, and middle eastern sonorities. Because of his long association with the open tuning style he could also be dubbed the “KIng of DADGAD”.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I first encountered his music while travelling in France in 1982 and stumbled upon his &lt;em&gt;Solilaï&lt;/em&gt; album that I bought in an &lt;a href="http://www.fnac.com/"&gt;FNAC in Paris&lt;/a&gt;. I still have that LP today and enjoy listening to it along with his numerous other releases since then.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;For me there was never a wrong note in the evening’s performance and this was probably the best of all the times that I have seen him perform.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Pierre concluded the evening with an encore medley of celtic tunes which was thrilling to me and was the perfect conclusion to a flawless performance.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Bravo Pierre Bensusan.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-6535562636955946656?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2011/03/more-reverb-pierre-bensusan-imt-03-16.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media='http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' url='http://lh4.ggpht.com/-w5iZcmSU6Oo/TYI08A_JhJI/AAAAAAAAC4s/uUhH1wThK_Y/s72-c/Pierre%252520Bensusan%252520%252540%252520IMT%25252003-16-2010_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800' height='72' width='72'/><thr:total>0</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink='false'>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3727995.post-8927255407262698441</guid><pubDate>Fri, 11 Mar 2011 22:41:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2011-04-07T23:51:32.239-04:00</atom:updated><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Tech</category><title>iPad 2 = Best Buy Fail</title><description>&lt;p&gt;Just got back from purchasing my iPad 2. Only spent about 1.5 hours in total on this exercise.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I first went to my local Best Buy store which is less than a mile from my house. I had called the day before to get a feel for their expected supply and was told they had 20 pieces of multiple sizes to sell. Armed with this information I took a chance. Well I arrive and am told at 4 pm they have 10 and are already sold out! I then go to the back of the store and ask to speak to a manager for clarification. There were already 20 people in line that had been waiting since 12 pm! I start asking questions about their expected stock and they can’t answer and don’t know anything. They then said that if I kept asking questions they would escort me from the store!&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Best Buy, your customer service is horrendous. You should be able to answer basic questions without threatening your customers. Give people enough information to make informed decisions. Stringing people along is not beneficial to your business or customers. If it’s too much for your business to handle something like this then just don’t bother.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;So, I abandoned this Best Buy failure and headed to my local Target store less than a quarter mile away.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I arrived to find that they only had 5 of the 32 gb model. I only wanted the 16 gb model but adapted to this new reality. I want to give high kudos to the Target staff in Wheaton, MD who were courteous and and honestly answered questions without equivocation. I later learned that they had been trained by their management for this occasion. It showed and is appreciated by this customer. Being honest with your customers is the only proper and appropriate way to behave. Target understands this – Best Buy does not.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I was fourth in line and so I was able to purchase an iPad 2 without drama and was on my way by 5:10 pm.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;If I had gone to one of the two Apple stores in my area, I would still be in line waiting although it has been stated online that Apple stores have plenty of supply.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I think the very small allocation to the non-Apple stores is poor planning by Apple and is mostly an exercise in frustration for customers. Either ship sufficient stock to partner stores or just only sell them at Apple. Apple could do better but it is a game they seem to enjoy playing?&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Update: I just saw this &lt;a title="Apple Pulling iPad 2 from Best Buy?" href="http://www.macrumors.com/2011/04/07/apple-pulling-ipad-2-from-best-buy/"&gt;article&lt;/a&gt; that points to Best Buy sales shenanigans and Apple being none too pleased. If this article is accurate, it explains my experience and further reinforces my belief that Best Buy is on a downward spiral and will fail in the not too distant future.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-8927255407262698441?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2011/03/ipad-2-bestbuy-fail.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><thr:total>1</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink='false'>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3727995.post-945184521937553469</guid><pubDate>Thu, 10 Mar 2011 16:31:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2011-03-10T11:35:53.260-05:00</atom:updated><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Music</category><title>California Guitar Trio at Wolftrap Barns 2011</title><description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;img style="margin: 0px 0px 5px" src="https://www.cgtrio.com/images/stories/cgtbillcropped.jpg" width="400" height="206" /&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;At the last moment, I decided to attend a &lt;a title="California Guitar Trio" href="https://www.cgtrio.com/"&gt;CGT&lt;/a&gt; performance last night at Wolftrap Barns. The band was in good form as usual and played a nearly perfect set. They were in a reminiscent mood since this is their twentieth anniversary tour. Paul Richards commented that they had a lot of history playing in the metro DC area and recounted these concerts plus their involvement in the Guitar Craft directed by &lt;a title="Robert Fripp Diary" href="http://www.dgmlive.com/diaries.htm?member=3"&gt;Robert Fripp&lt;/a&gt;. He mentioned their early Crafty Guitarists concerts at George Washington University over 20 years ago that I also attended. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;As in the past, they also recorded and burned CDs of the concert directly after the show. In my opinion, this should be standard practice at all concerts.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I absolutely love the Wolftrap Barns hall and it’s always perfect acoustic sound. I’ve had seats all over the hall and there isn’t a bad spot anywhere.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Next week I have tickets to the incomparable &lt;a title="Pierre Bensusan" href="http://www.pierrebensusan.com/index.php?newlang=english"&gt;Pierre Bensusan&lt;/a&gt; at IMT. A great couple of weeks for guitar music.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-945184521937553469?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2011/03/california-guitar-trio-at-wolftrap.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><thr:total>1</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink='false'>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3727995.post-5886499730341282902</guid><pubDate>Thu, 02 Sep 2010 04:02:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2010-09-02T00:02:47.677-04:00</atom:updated><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Music</category><title>September’s Here Again…</title><description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.google.com/url?url=http://s0.ilike.com/play%23David%2BSylvian:September:101051:m295039&amp;amp;rct=j&amp;amp;sa=X&amp;amp;ei=eiF_TIbzDcP88AarxbmKAQ&amp;amp;ved=0CBMQ0wQoADAA&amp;amp;q=david+sylvian+-+september&amp;amp;usg=AFQjCNHHnl40Oey6penmuV7REdZjn0obcQ&amp;amp;cad=rjt"&gt;September&lt;/a&gt; by David Sylvian&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-5886499730341282902?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2010/09/septembers-here-again.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><thr:total>0</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink='false'>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3727995.post-7930855441443255018</guid><pubDate>Sat, 24 Jul 2010 15:49:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2010-07-24T20:44:32.817-04:00</atom:updated><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Music</category><title>Zappa &amp; Glass at BSO with Marin Alsop</title><description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;img style="margin: 0px 0px 5px" src="http://images.publicradio.org/content/2007/03/13/20070313_classical_tracks_39.jpg" /&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The BSO gave a phenomenal performance last night at&amp;#160; Meyerhoff Hall of Baltimore’s native sons Frank Zappa and Philip Glass music.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Marin Alsop continues to be a breath of fresh air in the staid classical music community by “breaking the rules” and generally embracing the present and the future.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The BSO under Alsop’s able hand performed the admittedly tricky and complex notes of Mr. Zappa with great alacrity and aplomb.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I was so thrilled to hear one of my favorite Zappa compositions, &lt;em&gt;Outrage at Valdez, &lt;/em&gt;in a live performance. The eerie present day relevance (i.e. Gulf Oil Spill) as Ms. Alsop pointed out made the performance even more poignant. The BSO perfectly captured the mystery and mourning that makes this piece so moving. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Ms. Alsop and the BSO should be given 10 stars for presenting such an ambitious evening of music. Hopefully this will be repeated in the future?&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Update: The Baltimore Sun gives an enthusiastic review &lt;a title="Baltimore Symphony&amp;#39;s Zappa, Glass, Shodekeh concert generates great vibes" href="http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/classicalmusic/2010/07/baltimore_symphonys_zappa_glas.html"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-7930855441443255018?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2010/07/zappa-glass-at-bso-with-marin-alsop.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><thr:total>0</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink='false'>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3727995.post-9021671782876256408</guid><pubDate>Sat, 12 Jun 2010 15:26:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2010-06-12T11:26:40.350-04:00</atom:updated><title>Capital Audiofest Day 1</title><description>&lt;p&gt;Yesterday, I attended the first day of the &lt;a href="http://www.capitalaudiofest.com/"&gt;Capital Audiofest&lt;/a&gt; taking place at the Glenview Mansion in Rockville, MD. They were greeted by a packed house full of lifetime Happy the Man and progressive music fans. The band was in good spirits and performed a solid two hour set that included songs from their first album and as well as premieres from their forthcoming second album titled &lt;em&gt;The High Places&lt;/em&gt;. The title track is and extended masterpiece by the prolific Frank Wyatt.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Oblvion Sun is at its core longtime collaborators Stanley Whitaker and Frank Wyatt who formed along with &lt;a href="http://www.kitwatkins.com"&gt;Kit Watkins&lt;/a&gt;, Rick Kennel, and Mike Beck the original Happy the Man in the 1970’s. They went on to great fame and notoriety with two fantastic albums on Arista Records and performed extensively around their home base in the Washington, DC metro area.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The current band includes Bill Plummer on keyboards, Bill Brasso on drums, and David Hughes on Bass.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I have seen this current lineup several times and believe that they have really meshed and coalesced into a very lean and muscular performing unit. The sheer musicality and interplay is simply stunning and is a wonder to behold!&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;This band should not be missed. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S_Avf7M20KI/AAAAAAAACLk/K_njuImNrwU/s1600-h/Oblivion%20Sun%2005%5B5%5D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="Oblivion Sun" border="0" alt="Oblivion Sun" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S_AvgFm7iJI/AAAAAAAACLo/dIDCfKAvtDc/Oblivion%20Sun%2005_thumb%5B3%5D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="244" height="184" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S_AvgWH3HuI/AAAAAAAACLs/pdLYV2xLTOs/s1600-h/Oblivion%20Sun%2004%5B6%5D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="Stanley Whitaker, Oblivion Sun" border="0" alt="Stanley Whitaker, Oblivion Sun" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S_AvgrHF0RI/AAAAAAAACLw/OsZFVVaCPIE/Oblivion%20Sun%2004_thumb%5B4%5D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="184" height="244" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S_AvgzhOFCI/AAAAAAAACL0/07GXK-EoxPg/s1600-h/Oblivion%20Sun%2003%5B2%5D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="Stanley Whitaker, Oblivion Sun" border="0" alt="Stanley Whitaker, Oblivion Sun" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S_AvhIWsXBI/AAAAAAAACL4/dpsofpvPgcA/Oblivion%20Sun%2003_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" width="184" height="244" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S_Avhh01sfI/AAAAAAAACL8/9yRTCwp6aAE/s1600-h/Oblivion%20Sun%2002%5B2%5D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="Frank Wyatt, Oblivion Sun" border="0" alt="Frank Wyatt, Oblivion Sun" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S_AvhyTsHFI/AAAAAAAACMA/34ZbKOr1Eas/Oblivion%20Sun%2002_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" width="184" height="244" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S_AviQwsviI/AAAAAAAACME/8sxM-OaB9tw/s1600-h/Oblivion%20Sun%2001%5B2%5D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="David Hughes, Oblivion Sun" border="0" alt="David Hughes, Oblivion Sun" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S_Avii7la6I/AAAAAAAACMI/g88FaKOUIsQ/Oblivion%20Sun%2001_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" width="184" height="244" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-155834576218952023?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2010/05/oblivion-sun-orion-sound-studios-04-15.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media='http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' url='http://lh4.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S_AvgFm7iJI/AAAAAAAACLo/dIDCfKAvtDc/s72-c/Oblivion%20Sun%2005_thumb%5B3%5D.jpg?imgmax=800' height='72' width='72'/><thr:total>0</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink='false'>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3727995.post-3538075410225015347</guid><pubDate>Fri, 07 May 2010 05:04:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2010-05-07T13:07:34.786-04:00</atom:updated><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Tech</category><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Linux</category><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Ubuntu</category><title>Followup on Ubuntu, Wireless, and WPA #2</title><description>&lt;span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small"&gt;&lt;/span&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small"&gt;Thanks to a comment to this blog made by &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small" dir="ltr"&gt;knnniggett, there appears yet another way to deal with the RT2860 driver issue. This may turn out to be the definitive solution.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div style="font-family: inherit"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small" dir="ltr"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;div style="font-family: inherit"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small" dir="ltr"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;p&gt;The problem with upgrading to the unreleased kernel 2.6.33 is that it is unreleased. In the case of my RT2860 card it limits the speed to &amp;quot;G&amp;quot; 54 mbs speeds, and at least on my machine I could no longer suspend or hibernate properly.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div style="font-family: inherit"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small" dir="ltr"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;div style="font-family: inherit"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small" dir="ltr"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;p&gt;Apparently, there exists a package that installs backported drivers so that they will work on the current kernel. I just did this and I am happy to report it seems to work and I am running at &amp;quot;N&amp;quot; speeds. I'll have to test suspend after I make this post!&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div style="font-family: inherit"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small" dir="ltr"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;div style="font-family: inherit"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small" dir="ltr"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;p&gt;What I did was uninstall the 2.6.33 test kernel so I would revert back to 2.6.32. I then attempted to install the backport package that knnniggett suggests. He suggested this command line: &lt;/p&gt; &lt;blockquote&gt; &lt;div style="font-family: inherit"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small" dir="ltr"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small"&gt;sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-wireless-karmic-generic&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;/blockquote&gt; &lt;p&gt;I found this didn't work for me, but a slight modification to reflect that with 10.04 we are running &amp;quot;Lucid&amp;quot; not &amp;quot;Karmic&amp;quot;. So I modified the line to:&lt;/p&gt; &lt;blockquote&gt; &lt;div style="font-family: inherit"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small" dir="ltr"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small"&gt;sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucid-generic&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small" dir="ltr"&gt;&amp;#160;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;/blockquote&gt; &lt;div style="font-family: inherit"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small" dir="ltr"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;p&gt;And behold it works! You may find you need to change the setting in the Synaptic Package Manager under the Software Sources - Updates Tab and check mark the Unsupported updates (lucid-backports) and then reload the repositories. You could probably also do this from the command line with an apt-get update type of command.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div style="font-family: inherit"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small" dir="ltr"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;div style="font-family: inherit"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small" dir="ltr"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;p&gt;So thanks to knnniggett for the great suggestion.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-3538075410225015347?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2010/05/followup-on-ubuntu-wireless-and-wpa-2.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><thr:total>3</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink='false'>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3727995.post-344375487211196020</guid><pubDate>Wed, 05 May 2010 16:40:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2010-05-06T14:43:23.964-04:00</atom:updated><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Tech</category><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Linux</category><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Ubuntu</category><title>Followup on Ubuntu, Wireless, and WPA</title><description>&lt;p&gt;Well, my victory over non-functioning wireless adaptors and Ubuntu 10.04 was short lived. An install of Ubuntu updates this morning included the kernel update to 2.6.32 which replaces the default shipping Ubuntu 10.04 kernel. This of course broke my work using a compiled patched driver for the RT2860 chipset. Strangely, running through my driver install &lt;a href="http://www.ctbarker.info/2010/05/ubuntu-1004-wireless-chipsets-and-wpa.html"&gt;instructions&lt;/a&gt; does not work for me with kernel 2.6.32? I did some more searching and found this &lt;a href="http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9241119&amp;amp;postcount=4"&gt;post&lt;/a&gt; and a &lt;a href="http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.33.3-lucid/"&gt;link&lt;/a&gt; to a test kernel (2.6.33) that supposedly addresses the problem.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I downloaded the 2.6.33 test kernel to a thumb drive and installed it on my Ubuntu machine. I rebooted and don’t you know it works and I’m back online. Unfortunately, I note that it is only connecting at “G” (e.g. 54 mbs) speed. My card is capable of “N” speeds and with the original kernel and my compiled driver I could connect with a link speed of 135 mbs.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Oh well, I guess I should be thankful I can connect at all!&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;It is hard to understand the thought process that goes on in the Ubuntu organization that allows this type of thing (i.e. broken wifi drivers) to be acceptable. I think this &lt;a href="https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/496093/comments/107"&gt;post&lt;/a&gt; sums up the frustration pretty well.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;In my case, instead of whining, I tried to do &lt;a href="http://www.ctbarker.info/2010/05/ubuntu-1004-wireless-chipsets-and-wpa.html"&gt;something&lt;/a&gt; about it and help others as well. It would be great if the powers that be (&lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Shuttleworth"&gt;Shuttleworth&lt;/a&gt;?) at Ubuntu would take notice. It’s a pity because it mars Ubuntu 10.04 which is otherwise a stunning accomplishment.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-344375487211196020?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2010/05/followup-on-ubuntu-wireless-and-wpa.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><thr:total>2</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink='false'>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3727995.post-3862888595293902026</guid><pubDate>Sat, 01 May 2010 17:04:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2010-05-01T17:26:53.050-04:00</atom:updated><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Tech</category><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Linux</category><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Ubuntu</category><title>Ubuntu 10.04, Wireless chipsets, and WPA Security</title><description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S9xfKxKd0vI/AAAAAAAACK8/blFpBUG_yQk/s1600-h/1004header%5B1%5D%5B5%5D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="1004header[1]" border="0" alt="1004header[1]" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S9xfLBcsqzI/AAAAAAAACLA/rAngQX2MZIY/1004header%5B1%5D_thumb%5B3%5D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="390" height="109" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Ubuntu’s latest release, &lt;a href="http://www.ubuntu.com/"&gt;10.04&lt;/a&gt;, was officially posted this week. Overall, it is a very impressive effort and a milestone for the Open Source community. I have installed it on a new cheap desktop I recently built and it runs fantastically with fast boot times and nice desktop eye candy.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The one thing that spoils this effort is the continued hassles in getting wireless wifi cards working. I have a half dozen usb wifi sticks lying around and only one just works our of the box. I guess it wouldn’t be Linux if one didn’t have to at least compile a driver or two every now and then?&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Anyway, I recently purchased the &lt;a href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833320048"&gt;Asus PCE-N13 IEEE 802.11b/g/n PCI Express Wireless Adapter&lt;/a&gt;. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S9xfLTnhYbI/AAAAAAAACLE/Kv7BtVH2JIg/s1600-h/33-320-048-TS%5B1%5D%5B2%5D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="33-320-048-TS[1]" border="0" alt="33-320-048-TS[1]" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S9xfLq5T3VI/AAAAAAAACLI/Kp6PAgqbAI4/33-320-048-TS%5B1%5D_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" width="184" height="139" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;br /&gt;I bought the card on sale for $19.99 and on the basis that someone left comments that it worked in Ubuntu 10.04. Not sure what this fellow’s definition of working is but it doesn’t just work at least when you use WPA security. So, determined not to let this get the better of me, I embarked on a flurry of google searches.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;This card uses the &lt;a href="http://www.ralinktech.com/support.php?s=2"&gt;Ralink&lt;/a&gt; RT2860 chipset which is used in many products. The problem from what I’ve been able to determine is that the WPA source code definitions are wrong by default. It’s not clear why this is so but that seems to be the case. The fix and ultimate configuration is fairly straight forward if one can find clear and accurate instructions. There’s the rub.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I finally stumbled upon some &lt;a href="https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/496093/comments/25"&gt;good instructions&lt;/a&gt; but maddeningly they contained key errors that will surely frustrate the uninitiated. So, in the interest of helping those that follow, I offer my amended instructions that I have tested and believe to be accurate. With this guide you should be able to get a Ralink RT2860 based product running and connected to a secure router running WPA security and will do so after reboots.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The following steps were performed on a unmodified default Ubuntu 10.04 final code install. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;blockquote&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Step 1&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Download latest RT2860 driver source code from Ralink &lt;a href="http://tinyurl.com/32ss5m8"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;. You need to enter a name and an email and press accept to download.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Step 2 &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;Open and extract the downloaded file to a temporary directory in your Home directory.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Step 3 &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;Using an editor such as the default Gedit, open the driver source code file &lt;em&gt;./os/linux/config.mk&lt;/em&gt;. Use the find command to locate &lt;em&gt;HAS_WPA_SUPPLICANT&lt;/em&gt; and make sure it is set to yes. It should look like this when finished:&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;HAS_WPA_SUPPLICANT=y &lt;br /&gt;and do the same for: &lt;br /&gt;HAS_NATIVE_WPA_SUPPLICANT_SUPPORT=y&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Close and save this file.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Step 4&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Using an editor such as the default Gedit, open the file &lt;em&gt;./common/cmm_wpa.c.&lt;/em&gt; Use the find command to locate &lt;em&gt;MIX_CIPHER_NOTUSE&lt;/em&gt;. Replace this entire line (keep on one line)with this code:&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;WPA_MIX_PAIR_CIPHER FlexibleCipher = WPA_TKIPAES_WPA2_TKIPAES;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Step 5 &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;Perform these commands in a Terminal session one at a time. You can cut and paste. Using sudo puts you into Admin mode so you will be prompted for you Admin (probably) your default password.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;sudo make &lt;br /&gt;sudo make install &lt;br /&gt;sudo ifconfig wlan0 down &lt;br /&gt;sudo rmmod rt2860sta&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Step 6 &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;Rename the old &lt;em&gt;rt2860sta.ko&lt;/em&gt; driver file to &lt;em&gt;rt2860sta.ko.dist&lt;/em&gt; using a command such as:&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;sudo mv /lib/modules/2.6.*/kernel/drivers/staging/rt2860/rt2860sta.ko rt2860sta.ko.dist&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Note you need to replace the asterisk with the actual directory name of your kernel. Consult your file system directory structure for this.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;This is to prevent the old driver from being used. You could just delete the file as well I suppose.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Step 7&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;sudo depmod -a &lt;br /&gt;sudo modprobe rt2860sta&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;After you issue the previous command you should see the Desktop top panel Wireless icon come to life as it tries to connect. You will be prompted for a WPA password. Give it a little while and it should connect.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Not sure this command is necessary but you can use if the Wireless isn’t started automatically.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;sudo ifconfig wlan0 up&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Step 8&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Okay at this point you have made a lot of progress and should be happily surfing at up to 802.11n speeds. Take a break and marvel at your skills and the wonder of the Internet!&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Step 9 &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;But, and this is a biggie, what happens if you ever reboot? Unfortunately, you are back at square one without the RT2860 driver being loaded after a reboot. To remedy this situation, read on.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Step 10&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Copy the newly compiled driver from your temporary build directory in &lt;em&gt;./os/linux&lt;/em&gt; using a command like: &lt;br /&gt;sudo cp rt2860sta.ko /lib/modules/2.6.*/kernel/drivers/staging/rt2860/ &lt;br /&gt;Again replace the asterisk with the correct directory name.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Step 11 &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;Update your modules boot file with the following command: &lt;br /&gt;gksudo gedit /etc/modules &lt;br /&gt;Add the command &lt;em&gt;rt2860sta&lt;/em&gt; on a line at the end of the file. &lt;br /&gt;Close and save the file.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Step 12&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Reboot and check to see that you are now automatically connecting to your wireless network!&lt;/p&gt; &lt;/blockquote&gt; I hope this tutorial may be helpful for some people. &lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-3862888595293902026?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2010/05/ubuntu-1004-wireless-chipsets-and-wpa.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media='http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' url='http://lh5.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S9xfLBcsqzI/AAAAAAAACLA/rAngQX2MZIY/s72-c/1004header%5B1%5D_thumb%5B3%5D.jpg?imgmax=800' height='72' width='72'/><thr:total>80</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink='false'>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3727995.post-1743107245202737942</guid><pubDate>Wed, 28 Apr 2010 23:45:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2010-05-06T16:49:01.243-04:00</atom:updated><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Tech</category><title>Windows Home Server 2 Beta –“Vail”</title><description>&lt;p&gt;Just got finished building a new WHS server using an old &lt;a href="http://us.shuttle.com/barebone/models/k45.html"&gt;Shuttle K45&lt;/a&gt; case that I gutted and installed a &lt;a href="http://www.gigabyte.us/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=3357"&gt;Gigabyte GA-D510UD&lt;/a&gt; Atom based motherboard. The K45 case allows for custom graphics on the front so I whipped together something based on some Windows Server Wallpaper I found online. The Mini-ITX board installed perfectly. Then all I had to do was boot up the “&lt;a href="https://connect.microsoft.com/WindowsHomeServer?wa=wsignin1.0"&gt;Vail&lt;/a&gt;” install DVD and I was up and running. This will be a great test bed during the beta and may serve as my permanent WHS server once the beta is over. Some pictures below.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S9jIm2e2_QI/AAAAAAAACKo/swFjQ3zlSXI/s1600-h/100_0177%5B5%5D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="100_0177" border="0" alt="100_0177" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S9jInAReyEI/AAAAAAAACKs/6lRmB-5-uqI/100_0177_thumb%5B3%5D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="411" height="316" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S9jInWahdyI/AAAAAAAACKw/Oi9xsLlVrQk/s1600-h/100_0214%5B6%5D.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="100_0214" border="0" alt="100_0214" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S9jInsGgI5I/AAAAAAAACK0/MbnXTh92QRw/100_0214_thumb%5B4%5D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="414" height="320" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-1743107245202737942?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2010/04/windows-home-server-2-beta-vail.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media='http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' url='http://lh3.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S9jInAReyEI/AAAAAAAACKs/6lRmB-5-uqI/s72-c/100_0177_thumb%5B3%5D.jpg?imgmax=800' height='72' width='72'/><thr:total>5</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink='false'>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3727995.post-7698676516404192997</guid><pubDate>Fri, 12 Mar 2010 20:02:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2010-03-12T18:50:51.370-05:00</atom:updated><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Hi-Fi</category><title>Ray Samuels Audio – F-117 The Nighthawk</title><description>&lt;a href="http://www.raysamuelsaudio.com/products/f-117"&gt;&lt;img alt="DSC_6144[1]" border="0" height="275" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S5qd5CH3EYI/AAAAAAAACJw/s2oI8KhGCU8/DSC_6144%5B1%5D_thumb%5B1%5D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline;" title="DSC_6144[1]" width="407" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;br /&gt;My acquisition of audio goodies continues. This time it’s the just released &lt;a href="http://www.raysamuelsaudio.com/products/f-117"&gt;F-117 The Nighthawk Phono Preamp&lt;/a&gt; from Ray Samuels Audio. Ray specializes in creating high performing minature audio gems. He has gathered quite a following for his line of portable headphone amps.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The F—117 is a full featured phone preamp with up to 75db of gain and a choice of loading options all in the package about the size of a pack of cards. It’s other unique feature is it is designed to run entirely on batteries. Using a rechargeable lithium ion battery it is rated to run 8 hours per day for about 6 days!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Although break-in time is recommended, I have already completely enjoyed this addition to my system. It is extremely quiet and seems to have loads of dynamic range and frequency extension at both ends of the spectrum. I think the freedom from noisy AC power interference must be a reason for the excellent sonics.&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-7698676516404192997?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2010/03/ray-samuels-audio-f-117-nighthawk.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media='http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' url='http://lh6.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S5qd5CH3EYI/AAAAAAAACJw/s2oI8KhGCU8/s72-c/DSC_6144%5B1%5D_thumb%5B1%5D.jpg?imgmax=800' height='72' width='72'/><thr:total>0</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink='false'>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3727995.post-902119392364188725</guid><pubDate>Sun, 07 Mar 2010 02:22:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2010-03-07T21:07:31.535-05:00</atom:updated><category domain='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#'>Hi-Fi</category><title>Home Theater Update</title><description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;a title="Emotiva UMC-1" href="http://emotiva.com/umc1.shtm"&gt;&lt;img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="Emotiva UMC-1" border="0" alt="Emotiva UMC-1" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S5MN3lOWvCI/AAAAAAAACJM/ucC-ZyHkOo4/umc01%5B1%5D%5B21%5D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="397" height="216" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I’ve been immersed in Home Theater configuration these past couple of weeks. After waiting about a year, the Emotiva &lt;a href="http://emotiva.com/umc1.shtm"&gt;UMC-1&lt;/a&gt; was released. This is an amazing AV Pre-Processor for the latest in Audio and Video handling. This unit replaces my long in the tooth McCormack MAP-1 all analog multi-channel preamp. Now that almost all of my sources are digital and HDMI compliant a digital preamp makes sense. Luckily, the UMC-1 also has a Direct mode that is an all analog signal path for the one remaining analog source – my phono section.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;While some users have had some issues with the UMC-1, my experience has been trouble free. The audio and video are first rate. At $699 this is a real value for money product.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-902119392364188725?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2010/03/home-theater-update.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media='http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' url='http://lh4.ggpht.com/_jwj3IHjpksM/S5MN3lOWvCI/AAAAAAAACJM/ucC-ZyHkOo4/s72-c/umc01%5B1%5D%5B21%5D.jpg?imgmax=800' height='72' width='72'/><thr:total>0</thr:total></item><item><guid isPermaLink='false'>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3727995.post-5884053904009146440</guid><pubDate>Sat, 06 Mar 2010 22:49:00 +0000</pubDate><atom:updated>2010-03-06T18:04:43.258-05:00</atom:updated><title>Migration to blogger</title><description>Well, I went through a frenzied bit of web editing the other day trying to get my blog re-hosted using a custom domain on Blogger. The impetus of this change was the &lt;a href="http://blogger-ftp.blogspot.com/"&gt;announcement&lt;/a&gt; that Blogger would no longer support &lt;a href="http://blogger-ftp.blogspot.com/"&gt;ftp publishing&lt;/a&gt; going forward. This also corresponded with the fact that my current hosting a e-rice.net was up for renewal at the end of March.&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;So I waited patiently for Google to release their migration wizard. After many delays, it was released. I jumped in thinking this would be relatively easy. I thought I understood the issues but immediately I selected the wrong option and was stuck with a new blog at Blogspot and a failed migration that would not let me back up and start over again. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;After much hair pulling furious reading, I successfully edited my DNS and Cname records and finished the migration manually. I now have my blog re-hosted at Blogger but still located at my custom domain of ctbarker.info.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;One issue that caused problems, is that I use google apps and I found that when I tried to change blogger to point to my re-hosted blog it kept saying a blog already existed and would not make the change. I had already correctly changed all my DNS and Cname records but it refused to budge. Finally, I stumbled upon the fact that if you have the Sites featured turned on with Google Apps then this would block you. By turning off the Sites feature, I was able to return to the Blogger publishing menu and it successfully changed to my custom domain. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;One new problem I have encountered is that when I perform a search of my site the results display but when I select a link it come back with a broken link screen. This may be fallout from my failed migration but I am unsure how to fix this?&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also, my blog is still flagged as an FTP blog even though it is now hosted on Blogger and the migration wizard is stuck and will not complete? How to clear up this mess?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/3727995-5884053904009146440?l=www.ctbarker.info' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description><link>http://www.ctbarker.info/2010/03/migration-to-blogger.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Chris)</author><thr:total>0</thr:total></item></channel></rss>
